Sustainability Trip and New York Studio Visit by Shreyers Honor College Students October 2012

Dr. Conrad Tucker, (pictured) Distinguished Honors Faculty Member at Schreyer Honors College at Penn State University, defines sustainability as ".... a methodological approach that takes into account the impacts of human generated artifacts on the environment—pre-use, in-use and post-use. It proposes solutions to mitigate environmental impact."

The growing number of contemporary artists using repurposed, post industrial materials to make engaging works while simultaneously promoting an environmental message is growing in tandem with the overall concern for these issues. Exposing mechanical engineers and designers to the colossal works of artists that use recycled materials, provides an extreme look at the monumental problems we face in our use of petrochemicals and waste in manufacturing.
