ENVIRONMENTAL ART, SCULPTURE, INSTALLATION, UTOPIAN ARCHITECTURE
Kim Holleman is an interdisciplinary artist from New York who attended The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York and The Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, Holland. Holleman creates work at the cross sections of art, nature, and architecture. She uses her work to further conversations about our relationship to the environment and the built world.
Holleman has gained recognition across these disciplines. Her award-winning work, Trailer Park: A Mobile Public Park- a living NYC park built inside a 14’ mobile trailer- has been shown widely in New York. Major exhibitions include The New Museum for Contemporary Art where Trailer Park was called a “must see” by Art in America. This project was later covered by Banksy with his “Garden Truck” project in New York.
Holleman’s work has been the subject of a feature article in The New York Times and was the subject of Ms. Holleman’s TEDx Talk at The Cooper Union. Holleman’s solo show, Law of the Land, was chosen "Best In Show" by R.C. Baker in The Village Voice and was reviewed again in further depth in The Village Voice’s art section. The opening event for Holleman’s follow up solo show, Circa: 2012. recorded a record breaking 1,000 people in attendance and was selected by Papermag as the "Word of Mouth" show to see that week along with After Nature at The New Museum for Contemporary Art.
In 2013, Holleman was invited to join MIT Media Lab at The Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a Resident Artist, Visiting Scholar and Research Affiliate (2013-2017). There, she worked along side other artists, scientists, architects, and scholars working on interdisciplinary projects.
In 2020, Holleman began to mount large-scale environmental based public artworks in Europe. She has produced a permanent monumental work of public art, Wish You Were Here, as an artist in residence with Duppini Art Group on the highway leading to Gabrovsti Village.
In 2023, Holleman competed to represent Bulgaria at The Venice Architectural Biennial with Noviza Architects. She presented her work at 100 Stola in Sofia for Urban Spaces | Design Build Academy Sofia/Berlin, organized by The Collective Foundation Bulgaria, Supported by Goethe Institut. During her artist’s residency at Business Park Sofia, supported by The Collective Foundation, she created Suspended Lake, which was on view at Business Park Sofia in the lobby of building 15.
From 2023-2024, Kim Holleman became the Landis & Gyr Foundation Artistic Fellow with the Center for Advanced Study Sofia, where she embarked on a 5 month research-based art project focussed on Utopian Architecture and Sofia entitled, Future City. Holleman presented the models and research from her fellowship in a seminar which was also filmed for television in a 2-part series entitled, “Green Minutes” directed by Vladi Geshev of BTV. She also had the honor of presenting this project to the Deputy Minister of Culture of Bulgaria, and the Director of the National Palace of Culture in Sofia.
Kim Holleman continues to mount exhibitions in New York and Europe. Holleman has a work of public art at the Williamsburg Waterfront in New York. This project entitled, Down the Drain, is a large scale, site-specific work addressing water pollution, using reclaimed materials, and is currently on view.
