In the Pacific Ocean, between San Francisco and Hawaii, floats the "Great Pacific Garbage Patch" weighing 3.5 million tons (80% of which is thought to be plastics) and has grown exponentially since the 1950's. It is now larger than the state of Texas. The potential effects on the marine ecosystem since plastics never bio-degrade. Instead, plastics break down into smaller and smaller pieces. Plankton-feeding fish ingest huge amounts of plastics that have broken down to plankton-size particles.
